I’m in the market for an at-home espresso machine. Budget is between $500-$1,500. What should I buy?

I have a bambino and I wish I had gone a step up, it doesn’t get hot enough to properly extract anything but dark roast. If I were to buy again I’d go Gaggia Classic or used Rancilio Silvia + Niche Zero

We love our Jura. You can pick one up used in your price range.

Check James Hoffmann YouTube on budget machines and grinders. I think realistically you'll have to split the budget between both to get a good coffee. James is also just fun to watch 🥰

Nespresso is plastic garbage (despite their effort to brand as luxury), avoid. Breville is middle range, ok quality, a bit of a toy still. In your budget you could get Rocket / Lelit which are well built and have standard size portafilters and will last for life.

nespresso machine, all that fancy shit eventually breaks and then you have to wait 3 months for it to be repaired in Italy.

You can’t go wrong with any of the Brevilles. I found investing in a good bottomless portafilter to have higher impact in taste and quality

Breville. Spend more on the grinder than the brewer. Makes more of a difference.

Quick Mill 820. As opposed to what some people in this thread assert about espresso machines, it does not break and is not complicated. I bought a second-hand 20 year old one and it has been going strong for years. https://www.quickmill.it/en/products/gruppo-quick-mill-en/mod-0820/

Making espressi at home is not an easy thing. If you just want to enjoy, go for an automatic machine, jura are the best but may be too expensive, not sure of contenders in the US. If you want to spend countless hours trying to make the best espresso on earth, you need to to get a 58mm brass group + a flat-burr grinder.

If you're not super into making getting a cup of espresso/lungo into a ceremony or ritual I can highly recommend just getting a Jura e6 and go for high qualify beans in small batches so they never get stale.

Don’t skimp on the grinder. It’s equally as important as the machine (if not more so).
