Question: is the proper way to dynamically generate SVGs by just `appenChild` shapes to the `svg` element?

So far I've been using the canvas for generative art and a quick search on my above question doesn't turn anything else up.

Yes. You're on the right track. appendChild() is the simplest way to go.
