I spent more than two years and ~$80k (in EUโ€ฆ!) of my personal money on dentists and orthodontic specialists due to health problem I had. For non-essential treatment they dragged me from treatment to another. After first year, meticulous journaling, and research I started to get this visceral feeling of mistrust everytime I visited them and looked them in the eyes. All of them were high-profile, well-regarded professionals. None knew what they were doing. Malice was probably not there but nevertheless their actions and hectic decisions were guided by incentives that did not align for my wellbeing at all.

I had a friend whose family ended up suing their childhood dentist after discovering that they were drilling holes in their teeth and then claiming they had cavities to be filled so they could bill the family and insurance. Messed up.

depends on the dentist imo. My previous dentist was a bit too enthusiastic to drill. Hence I found a new one whose ethos was to drill as a last resort only. Periodic cleaning > invasive treatments

Completely agree with you. I had an amazing dentist in NYC who never scammed me but I think tons of them do scam you and I went through scammers before I found her

weirdly ive never had faith to begin with. i have been extremely reluctant to go for even a regular cleanup in the past few years coz i just know they'll make a mountain out of a molehill and suck my bank account dry.

Sad to hear that, Iโ€™ve not felt that way about any of the dentists Iโ€™ve regularly seen. Chiropractors on the other handโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve got receipts..

Iโ€™ve gone twice in 20 years. Last time I went in the doc was shocked I have all my wisdom teeth, space for them, and no cavities. I think theyโ€™re just a glorified brown bear car wash for your teeth, just as likely to damage your mouth as they are to clean it

Mine retired last month and I hate it. He's a complete saint and many people I know seem to actively dislike their dentist.

I specifically know a scamming dentist in La Jolla. If you need his name let me know.
