They aren’t dropping eth names though? This is regarding how they will onboard more web2 users in future Don’t want users to HAVE to buy an ENS on L1. By default, users can register a free username. If you want a decentralized name, ENS will be supported as a first class name but you’ll need to pay for that

Yeah I was surprised to hear this in the meeting too given it’s a pretty big change. Didn’t know if there was any prior discussion about it since I miss some dev calls.

Varun said that they will have upcoming FIPs to implement these so it sounds like there will be more opportunity to provide feedback on it. correct me if I’m wrong @v

No one is dropping “Ethereum names”. Quite the opposite. We are making our namespace ENS compliant , and allowing users to choose between free, centrally issued ENS names and paid, decentralized ENS names.
