Things that will make Farcaster successful:
- Getting to credible neutrality / 100% permissionless protocol
- Continuing to grow protocol *daily* active users
- The developer experience for building new apps is solid
- Minimizing spam on the network

is minimizing spam on the network a client responsibility?

There has to a reasonable solution at the network level otherwise building a new app requires a lot of spam prevention to make it usable. Solvable, but permissionless sign ups would overwhelm the network right now.
