Open source, permissionless fault proofs are live on OP Mainnet, and with them the OP Stack arrives at Stage 1 decentralization.

This is a major step forward for the Superchain!

Permissionless fault proofs allow anyone to:

• Withdraw ETH and ERC-20 tokens from an OP Stack Chain to L1 without the need to involve a trusted third party  
• Contribute to Superchain security themselves by challenging invalid withdrawals

While participation in the Fault Proof System is permissionless, as part of a responsible & safe rollout the Security Council retains the power to revert to a permissioned state in the event of a system failure. This approach meets @L2Beat’s industry-standard Stage 1 definition.

The Fault Proof System was built and tested by many teams including OP labs, @Base, @a16zcrypto, Testinprod, and the OG George Hotz.

We’re also appreciative of auditors and the community for their reviews.
