Anyone else starting to get worried about this rise of casual open imperialism? Like, not "peaceful trade at prices social justice activists don't like" imperialism but actual "let's go conquer stuff" imperialism. I know it's "meant to be a joke", but often such jokes are a first step to normalizing something dark...

History of America: - slavery - indigenous genocides - Christian nationalism manifest destiny global military empire - war after war after war stealing resources - tens to hundreds of millions killed But people will still call it "peaceful trade at prices social justice activists don't like" and mock those who correctly identify it as a fascist colonial empire. I agree with your assessment of how bad Trump's overt imperialism is, I just think it's already been here for a long time. In fact, it's probably almost over. The left just hopes to dismantle the empire peacefully from within so we can negotiate peace with the world, rather than the current plan which is we're all going to die of nuclear war because imperialists can only escalate.

Not a historian but I'd say that history of any country rose to the local and spread to neighboring powers via what worked for others... Toss in different variables within the same category but they all should look similar to what you stated. You are right though, it's already been here for a long time IMO (frog in cold water slowly boil concept)
