Noob question: why are nouns called nouns? Does each one have a particular noun (in English or some other language) attached?

Yes, all but one is a verb technically I think. The way it is drawn seems to imply the action more than the thing itself. Sometimes the accessory attributes (also mostly nouns and not all English!) can thematically modify the whole into becoming a new compound noun.
