i'm a little frustrated with ppl taking cheap dunks on nouns has any *centralized* NFT project with a comparable ~$50M spend exported more new tech, culture, and public goods funding? (maybe only exception is penguins) the fact that nouns has done much much more with actual *decentralized* governance (and all the inefficiencies that comes from that) makes it a remarkable example of maybe having hope that decentralized internet communities can do some real things (like building its own gov tools, winning dota tournaments, making feature length movies, etc). ofc there is a lot to actually be critical of. for example value capture feels very low compared to what we've produced. but lumping nouns into the bucket of "look, another dao wasting money" is a cheap and lazy take https://x.com/hongkim__/status/1820916246319341923

Great and thorough response -- bookmarking for the future. Might be worth adding the rest of your twitter response as a reply here as well. btw no idea who this dude is -- easy to look from the outside in and see only flaws but the impact is undeniable as you laid out so well. We all have our frustrations here but at least we can also see the positives.

Don't be too frustrated, Peter is just mad that the investment DAOs he created return less than institutional funds. He can preach "If you want to go far, go together" as much as he wants, but all I see is jealousy that we have a thriving community of contributors and he doesn't

Is decentralization supposed to compete on capital efficiency? Seems like the wrong performance criteria to begin with.

Nouns have flaws, but it's hard to not respect the project for it's brave vision and work done on governance. Nouns will always be the OG of decentralized, bottom-up brands

The biggest thing I take away from this is sure, there is room for improvement. Post-proposal governance and oversight is one way to do this. Clearer, standard milestones and goals/ROI/brand impact for larger prop funds requests. Streaming funds and the DAO having the option to stop or claw back funds and maintain strong social and financial accountability. But overall believe Peter's take is the wrong conclusion and appreciate your take. We are in a great experiment with all DAOs, easy to forget that.

Important to keep some perspective. Individual brands spend billions of dollars per year marketing themselves. (~$300bn in North America in 2021) $50m on growing a global brand (plus everything else Nouns does) isn’t too big. There are many brands you’ve never heard of that spend far more!

I've spoken with Peter on a couple occasions. He is a fan of Nouns and would certainly like to see it shine and have a greater impact. He has been doing a great job with the onchain gaming community, and perhaps it's a poorly expressed desire for closer collaboration

The problem with the initial tweet is that you can substitute Nouns for almost any org / institution name and it has the same impact btw.

unfortunate some people like peter (who I normally like) have this perspective! it's ofc not true and surprises me to see. all organizations have drama, nouns' is just in public. it's still the best example of decentralized gov and continues to fund a huge variety of amazing ideas. trying to think of what we could do better based on this feedback, but tbh i think we should just keep daoing what we do best: funding awesome ideas and proliferating. I also joined post forks.. from what I've heard it sounds like most of the drama occurred during that period. x.com/willyogo/status/1820927070458826769

Not a noun holder (yet), but I’ve always held Nouns in super high regard. I don’t think ppl realize how difficult that level of alignment is at that scale. The fact that NounsDAO continues to produce *anything* of value via current onchain governance models/adoption/UI, is truly incredible.
