The end goal for DeFi is to be the back-end for finance, not the front-end.

Disagree. On a long enough timescale, it’s both. Short term I agree with you. But also front ends are analogous to dumb terminals, they just do interaction. All the magic is in DeFi and wallets.

Over a long enough timescale, do you believe that the majority of users will possess non-custodial wallets?

Personally, I don't think that's realistic. The vast majority of folks strongly prefer convenience over security -- and I don't see that changing. I do believe we can find a hybrid solution with a bank that has all the safeguards users wants (max withdrawals, security, etc) while using DeFi under the hood.

A vast majority of people would prefer to eat sugar all day and drink alcohol all night, that ideal is unfortunately orthogonal to any sort of positive feedback loops beyond just dopamine. The same is true with believing that there’s a magic way for someone else to custodian my money and always give it back
