I notice among people I talk to more enthusiasm toward learning French than Spanish. This confuses me; my feeling is that Spanish unlocks far more countries and speakers than French does and so is a more natural first choice.

Interesting take. To me, designer watches signal wealth in a way that you don’t care about the correct time. If you are smart, you buy a watch that can actually tell time accurately(quartz / smart watch).
