PSA - We're increasing the price of 1 storage unit from $5 to $7 next week w/ permissionless launch - Everyone who migrated last month got 2 free storage slots - 1 storage slot: 5000 casts, 2500 likes, 2500 follows - You can buy storage on @sammdec.eth's helpful site with OP Mainnet ETH. https://caststorage.com

just to be clear, all new users will get at least 1 free storage unit on signup?

oh boy. that's pretty rough onboarding experience no? I'm physically feeling the regret of the last month of work to build on farcaster first You're telling me that I have to tell users they need to pay before they're able to take any valuable actions on my app?

Can the protocol give users a certain free amount of storage? Like ~100 casts ~200 reactions

Or, since this is a classic example of a public good worth funding, perhaps there can be a way for the community to buy and allocate micro storage units and gift them to new casters (mayb via purple) But the idea of hitting my users with a paywall at the first instance they want to use my product. No.

Gifting exists today in the contract, i.e. you can buy storage for any address. You can do this on caststorage.com today. Our hypothesis is people will be willing to pay if it's valuable. So our focus is on making it valuable.

I'm just fairly concerned that users will severely churn if they hit paywalls before value and that it will be expensive and complicated to solve this app-side (e.g. by sponsoring new users and giving them N number of casts / reactions) For users of my app I don't care if they post on farcaster I want them on my app

Agree that friction is tough, but there challenge of guaranteeing a decentralized, user-controlled system means you are stuck with hard trade offs. Farcaster: user-controlled, storage limits + cost Twitter: 3rd-party controlled, no storage limits + free Pick your configuration and I'll tell you the challenge.

tbc I'm not advocating anything other than the ones Farcaster has chosen. User controlled, storage limits, has costs. I'm pointing out that for small apps that want to build on top of Farcaster where we will have to do significant onboarding (e.g. we have non-crypto native users and this will be their only 1/

2/ only Farcaster app, it's a tough sell. Of course that could mean that I need to go build on something else. But I'd prefer to build here. Here are the constraints:

For apps like this, our early userbase: 1. will churn if they have to pay before value (if there's not a free tier) 2. will likely not cast in other channels, at least with their free credits From their perspective, they're not signing up for Farcaster they're signing up for an app and the app is charging them.
