At point is it legitimate for a certain government (state, city, municipal etc) to say a commodity or service (water, utilities etc) should be a right for all of its citizens? And provide the public utility as a monopoly? Will emerging network states / city states do the same?

You don’t think the government should provide any commodity or service? Are we talking like private roads and justice system? If so, then I’m curious what you think the government should do.

call me crazy but i think markets might be a more efficient way to provide cheap goods and services at scale compared to government-run monopolies ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mostly agree, but some services are natural monopolies. In that circumstance I’d prefer the monopoly to be in the hands of the organisation that at least ostensibly represents everyone, rather than the explicitly self interested one. Perhaps DAOs have a role to play in this space in the future.

A couple of questions on this. What’s the evidence for this claim? Is/ Should efficiency be the only goal when it comes to the provision of public utilities? Do you think this would lead to better outcomes for society as a whole?

Check out Hydro Québec. Badass gov monopoly that pretty much guarantees Québec’s relative autonomy and tech industry for the future. The province is a giant battery with the cheapest electricity in Canada.

Those aren’t the only options, public-private partnerships are a thing. Markets are def more efficient for commodities, but I feel like some things (e.g. infrastructure, emergency services) are better solved at the collective level. Personally, I don’t see anarchy-capitalism scaling without some major issues.
