Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??! I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me. https://x.com/tracewoodgrains/status/1826601506885320775

I think many people fall into the habit of tipping a standard amount without much thought. However, there are definitely those who adjust their tip based on the quality of service. It might not be a universal practice, but the idea does hold some weight for those who do consciously evaluate their experience.
