Old money The old money style (from English — "old money") began to emerge in America in the late 1920s. Local aristocrats who studied at the best colleges in the country, living in country houses and vacationing on the Cote d'Azur, without realizing it, created a timeless style. The concept of "old money" appeared after the American Civil War, when old bills and coins began to be valued much higher than their new counterparts. Thus, only the local elite could become owners of old money, who liked to show off their noble-style outfits, which favourably distinguished them from ordinary people. 2 The aesthetics of old money was formed among the ancestral European aristocrats who moved en masse to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Children from the upper class learned to imagine themselves in the society of the "new world" and chose elegant and sophisticated clothes made of expensive materials to impress the local bourgeoisie.
