I think the dark forest theory gets it wrong. The internet isn't retreating into private groups—it's building cities. Everyone can see them, anyone can join, but you have to fully live in one to understand what's being built there and appreciate the knowledge and culture.

real world cities all started off as tiny villages, some literally hidden in dense forests

tomorrow's internet cities will all start out as dark forest villages at some point; some will just grow and scale quicker than others
