Why are first person accounts such a huge narrative trope in sci-fi works?

That’s a good shout. Most often I see them used to lore dump backstory to a present situation (voice logs, journals, etc.) so they help fast forward the past action. But it makes me wonder why we don’t actually experience the events being narrated; why do we (observer) often arrive after something has happened?

This is just a guess, but:

Maybe it's because sci-fi plots often require the audience to suspend their disbelief before the plot can proceed. A first-person account feels more reliable, and quickly and easily legitimizes the story.
