Why are first person accounts such a huge narrative trope in sci-fi works?

This is just a guess, but: Maybe it's because sci-fi plots often require the audience to suspend their disbelief before the plot can proceed. A first-person account feels more reliable, and quickly and easily legitimizes the story.
