How do you choose an editor? Reached out to a couple of freelance editors and got a sample edit from each. For both I disagree with some of their edits; half the time it seems like more a style issue than a technical issue. I'm contemplating self-publishing and everyone says you need an editor, but I'm really struggling to see the value-add.

I tried this for my debut self-published book. It was *okay*, not spectacular. How I feel about editors now (subject to change): a phenomenal editor is an immediate and noticeable hell yes. Otherwise, they're just an extra reader who makes suggestions.

That's exactly how I feel, thank you for putting it so succinctly into words! I ended up going with one of the two I got a sample edit from but I don't have high hopes for it. Sounds like you did have an experience with a phenomenal editor; I hope one day to find one of my own!

Wouldn't say I've found an editor like that unfortunately. It's just a gut feeling having tried it myself and having found that it was merely okay. I think phenomenal editors are likely rarer than great authors.
