I work in messaging and honestly have no idea. 50/50 split in the people I talk to

Yes. Core encryption is the same. All in on MLS. Best place to start on integrating into your app is here: https://docs.xmtp.org/inboxes/build-inbox. Goal of the testnet is to validate offchain message replication is working reliably with real operators around the world before we throw user traffic at it.

1. We are expecting most messages on the network to be paid for by the application, not the user. So "this message was sent by this app" is public but there is no connection to which user sent it on the network (client signatures are inside the ciphertext). 2. We do support ERC-1271 and ERC-6492 at the public identity layer. But there is no way to track which messages relate to which identities unless you can decrypt the message 3. The Payer (run by the app) sits between the user and the network and mixes together all messages from the application. Users might choose to have additional layers of disintermediation between themselves and the payer, but we treat that as optional from the protocol perspective.

When talking to app developers the biggest question has always been "how much is this going to cost?". The answer can't be "it depends on the market price of some token". Who wants that? USDC == predictable pricing for devs.

You won’t like the song the first couple listens. Then it’ll get stuck in your head and you’ll truly learn to hate it.

Not just under consideration, but coming soon. We should have them supported in our SDKs this month. Smart wallets will not be able to talk to accounts using older versions of the XMTP SDK, so will need some time for everyone to get upgraded before they are broadly useful.

Probably too long a convo for a FC thread. Can I share the public draft with you for feedback when it’s ready?

The app typically will do it on behalf of the user, so no one has to pay gas fees themselves or get de-anonymized by the tx.

We’ll have an XIP up soon that should answer all those questions in more depth. Sneak peek: 1. Causal ordering between on and offchain messages. 2. Hardest part of the thing. Good news is that you can know that a reorg happened and re-create the group in the worst case. 3. All on the client

Great Q as always. Previously we talked about using a variant of MLS that didn’t require total ordering. Decided to change gears and just use a smart contract for sequencing commits, so we have total ordering even post-decentralization. Lets us keep vanilla MLS.

We are working hard to get the version with group chat ready for the App Store. DM shanemac.converse.xyz on any XMTP app to get early access

Just getting back to this. I don't see any public record of the address currently registered to jonwu.eth having ever been on XMTP. Maybe he was messaging you from a different wallet? My DMs are open and happy to help figure out what's going on here.
