A chill guy decided to spend a spiritual honeymoon at the Kumbh Mela, unaware that he would become the next victim of the media. People turned him into a monk, only to ridicule him as a stoner who had no control over his thoughts, ignoring the fact that 90% of Indian monks gathering at the Kumbh Mela are involved in some kind of substance use. They have no issue worshiping monks who live in an altered state, which appears to them as a delusion of enlightenment but actually feeds their spiritual ego while maintaining their desire to use substances as a gateway to meet God. The problem lies in the core of the popular integration of substance use with spirituality, defended in the name of Shiva, interpreting symbolism as an endorsement of consumption. This is actively promoted in pop culture, making millions of people addicted to ganja and opium in the process.
