One limit of blockchain-hardness is that interacting with it requires intermediating software. That limits rate of exploration (due to cost), and it prevents most people from actually touching blockspace themselves (due to disparity of skill). Open Source makes Blockchain much more valuable as a Blockchain with opaque, non public code which can not be audited and verified, can't be trusted, and is thus worthless.
