I went a few years ago when still living in Tokyo and once you walked along the river it was pretty emtpy. Tbf, it was also freezing - and eventually we ended up in an izakaya that had wasabi sour. That;s what I remember of that trip.

No. I've heard it's wonderful. Not sure about the crowds, though. Getting too long in the tooth for that these days haha. 
Shinjuku station area was a zoo tonight... xmas shopping, big tourist draw etc. But the Projection mapping site was not so busy... mostly office towers and some high-end hotels.
