English is a mixed-up blender of a language (both in vocabulary *and* grammar) that changes as speakers use it vs. top-down control (see: French). This is a usage trend along with:

• depreciation of the subjunctive mood, “if I were…”
• depreciation of whom, “whom am I giving this to?”

Addendum: pedantic English grammarians crying and pounding the tables with their fists rn, “Noooo! You’re supposed to say, ‘If I WERE THEY, WHOM I still wish well, I’d try to accept that English is WE all!’”

• the verb “to be” taking an object, “These are they,” “This is he,” “That’s we,” etc.

Pedantic grammarians will grit their teeth and cry, “no!”, surely as they did when English lost thee and thou. But if I was them, who I still wish well, I’d try to accept that English is us all.
