Every time we've tried to define it by a single trait, we find that it exists elsewhere in the animal world. Tool construction and use? Complex and fluid social networks? Language? Theory of mind? Forethought and planning? Culture and society? All of them have been observed in other species. 1/

I posit that it's not any single trait, but all of those traits combined—and relatively high competence *across* all those traits—that make us human. We're highly adaptable, capable, and social generalists who can survive and thrive in nearly every terrestrial environment. That's what means to be human. 2/2
