Putin Revises Nuclear Doctrine ⏺The Russian president signed a decree amending the country’s state policy on nuclear deterrence. This comes amid reports that the U.S. has authorized Ukraine to strike Russian targets using its own weapons, and Ukraine has reportedly done so for the first time. ⏺The revised doctrine introduces a provision allowing for a response to aggression by non-nuclear states. However, this response is conditional on the non-nuclear state receiving support from a nuclear-armed nation. ⏺Aggression by a non-nuclear country with backing from a nuclear state is now classified by Russia as a "general attack." Furthermore, if the nuclear state is part of a military alliance, Russia considers the entire bloc to be involved in the conflict. ⏺The previous doctrine stated that Russia could resort to nuclear strikes only in response to a nuclear attack or an assault threatening the nation’s existence.
