OK, so Boeing is famously falling apart largely because it has outsourced too much of its manufacturing processes, and lost the ability to control quality. Does outsourcing always have that result? Are there examples of organizations that have done this successfully, and what distinguishes them?

Most of Boeing’s recent issues have been largely due to really bad internal quality processes, mostly in final assembly at Boeing and not suppliers. Apple is the best example of outsourcing all manufacturing while maintaining quality.

A big catalyst for the decline was the 1997 acquisition of McDonnell-Douglas. A lot of the acquired folks were MBA-types and ended up in leadership roles that shortcut the Q/A processes to cut costs.
