Professors should inspire. Those that do do it by knowing the subject they are teaching so well that it comes naturally, and are able to bring in real world examples on the fly that answer the question everyone is asking: why am I here? Most profs do not inspire.

How do you define “help” ? Self learning is best learning but pointers are quite helpful

Even just content has a pedagogy though. If you think about how to structure a lecture inductively or how to frame the problem you’re teaching about, you’re helping your students learn.

I get what you’re saying, and think autonomous learning should be better cultivated at school. That would then give more freedom to the professor to inspire and guide.
