It seems the protagonist arc of metamodernism is more or less coming to terms with the fact we are on an absurd interactive ride, and we can enjoy it and that's enough. Is this close to the mark?

Depends on the implementation and only just recently acquired the vocab, but I'd call that neutral form metamodernism Strong form is "Acknowledgement of Absurd" + "All we can do is enjoy it" Neutral form is "We can enjoy it and that's enough" Weak form is "We can enjoy it"

If that is the case, then I don’t expect it to last long.

IMHO examination of sincerity is a bubble luxury. It's hard to explain how agents of power seem dense or even comical, but are so consequential. Their precursors acted no different but were less known; they were more mystical and less ironic. Robespierre will return and metamodernism will seem quaint.

Hmmm... 3 things I think counter that arc - Physical Violence has (largely) disappeared from the avg Western life, reducing the comfort, ease, and effectiveness with which it is deployed - State tools for coercion/suppression are easily 100x more effective today - Tech (including AI) is still improving quality of life

Interesting thread to pull though - it's just as a former agent of violence I think most people most of the time are cripplingly terrified by the thought of getting physically punched in the face and its hard to imagine a not WWIII scenario that would cause enough grievance for that to change Could always be wrong tho

What would have followed if Pence rejected the electors? When Napoleon announced the dissolution of the Directory, they laughed him out, so he returned with soldiers and they jumped out of the windows and it was gone. I don’t want this to be a bubble, but I can think of a few ways it gets popped.

Honestly, I do think that’s a defining question in the next decade I still think the “returning with soldiers” is a completely different thing now, especially with regards to citizenry and the absolute goat rodeo it would be to wrangle a modern battalion for that purpose, but a radical ex general might swing it
