so, how do creators make money on the internet?

the rough takeaway from my previous thread was that *attention* is paramount for monetizing effectively on the internet, yet none of the internet’s business models optimize for it.

so what is the current state of affairs and what alternative does /spotlight propose?

first, the basics. 

if you have a farcaster account, you already have a spotlight account. you can earn ETH before ever logging in.

SpotlightV1 proposes an alternative model of patronage that is simple and flexible: you have one unit of attention to sell per day and that’s it.

your daily spotlight starts at a minimum price and can theoretically increase to any value, fluctuating based on the demand formula explained in the next cast.

the protocol runs a rolling dutch auction where
- your spotlight can be booked up to one week in advance
- once per day everyday, the spotlight seven days from now becomes available
- the sooner in the week a spot is booked, the more future prices increase


at equilibrium, the price of the service you’re providing algorithmically adjusts to the highest value someone is willing to pay for it

this visual describes the optimistic case of a creator who, within three weeks of promoting their spotlight, has already generated enough attention to be grossing 0.2 ETH a day or more in revenue

[note that Spotlight requires no config or technical understanding from either creator or consumer.

maybe this visual represents the case of a successful podcast host who wants to monetize via tasteful in-episode sponsored content.

they offer a ten second bloc during the episode per each spotlight booked.

the spotlight price algorithm captures the highest possible value someone is willing to pay

and the farcaster social graph determines who is allowed to book. 

maybe the chart represents the case of a digital artist creating a limited series of customized works for their most diehard fans

the artist starts producing pieces for early bookers, who post their satisfaction with the work which generates excitement which leads to an increased price for future works

the artist is building trust with their community and benefiting financially from it, 

while curating who can participate via spotlight’s FC integration.

there are no shortage of monetization strategies creators can retrofit around spotlight’s more efficient, curated model.

and with the benefit of a new primitive, we believe creators will discover and introduce entirely novel models as well.

it takes a second to get. that's why i've been rolling out the threads slowly.

short answer is that it's what you make it. it's an economic primitive to build a business around. on its own, it's nothing.
