The main ingredients of a wife cake are very simple: a thin crust made from flour, and a filling that typically includes winter melon, almond paste, sesame, and five-spice powder

The couple was very poor, and the wife sold herself as a servant to help her husband’s family. To buy back his wife’s freedom, the husband made and sold these cakes, which became very popular
