i always liked the first two books but have tried and failed twice to get through that hideous strength

I've been revisiting a bunch of books I adored as a kid and teenager and have found things roughly flipped. Couldn't stand Paralandra as a kid. Loved That Hideous Strength. On the boomer reread, Paralandra was wonderful, THS was _hard_ to muscle through. I liked it for its prescience, but man, the bear, merlin, etc, all made it rougher than I remember.
