In NYC, BIDs (Business Improvement Districts) handle much of street maintenance, cleaning, landscaping, public art, and programming. It’s a local gov style, but wealthy neighborhoods ultimately end up having more and better-funded BIDs, due to higher property values and more businesses, leading to higher assessments and more funding, plus private donations and grants.
We need better financial instruments for public space that is equitably distributed across all neighborhoods, not just affluent areas!!! 2 replies
