Interesting fact! Alcohol in thermometers Until the 17th century, thermometers were filled not with mercury, but with alcohol. According to various sources, it was brandy or cognac. Only in 1667 the first thermometers with liquid (after air thermometers) appeared, but there was a problem with their use: thermometers filled with water burst due to freezing of liquid at low temperatures. And to solve this problem, instead of water they decided to use brandy, or rather wine alcohol.
