The era of counterculture-as-cool is over. In the past, subversiveness against the mainstream was considered hip. Now, culture is so fragmented that there is nothing to rebel against. The only standard we can agree upon is pure numbers. Ergo, coolness is determined, like anything else, by what is objectively popular.
