I’m having a huge problem like many others right now as there isn’t an obvious replacement. I’ve recently just gone back to looking at the NYT front page for the first time in 15 years.

I glance at the following each day — helpful to get a global perspective given US news organizations are so myopic and insular Al Jazeera English El Pais US English Edition Economic Times (India) Financial Times (UK)

I don't think there are good alternatives. I'm not sure there ever really were. I think getting a good sense of history, from diverse perspectives helps illuminate themes that are still present, and can give a good basis for understanding modern events. If you get good at that, you almost don't need news other than to place new names and faces on issues that some of which are ancient. Of course, a lot of things are urgent, but I suspect the powers that be will become better at obfuscation. It's enough to know power is consolidating, getting more brutal yet at the same time societal foundations are cracking globally. That alone is enough information to be caught up enough to understand we need new paradigms asap. One of the things I love about this place is folks seem to grasp that intuitively, even if I don't agree with everyone's different solutions.

Hope someday the world has a major newspaper that's not run for profit or propaganda. I don't think it exists at the moment. Lots of good independent media but it's all over the place and hard to curate. Some good journalism in the corporate media but it's hard to trust due to the profit motive and government/military propaganda omnipresent in those papers.

I struggle with this constantly. I’ve found what works for me is: -NYT -Economist -Al Jazeera Lighter dive via podcasts. Deeper dive just reading history books 😂. It’s more work upfront but once you build some base knowledge on the history of locations you care then things start clicking. Haven’t tried adding AI to this flow (yet)
