The new leader of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Jolani) meeting with Turkey’s foreign minister. Sharaa has recently upped his clothing game and is not just wearing a suit but even a tie now. Sharaa also recently met with top U.S. State Department officials, after which he was removed from the terrorist wanted list where he had a $10M bounty on his head previously. He was formerly a senior member of a ruthless Al Qaeda branch in Iraq, but since he won the war in Syria he has been reaccepted even in Washington. Lesson: The only thing that matters is winning.

he's saying and superficially doing all the right things which theoretically shouldn't mean much especially over such a short period, but it's also strictly better than not saying and not doing the right things

I love the last statement. The only thing that, indeed, matter is winning. 👏

Even if, as I am, we are cynical about his true intentions (which his actions, not words, will eventually reveal over the next few years), there is now a generational opportunity (combined with Israel’s near-destruction of Hamas and Hezbollah) for the West to realign the balance of power in the Middle East away from Iran and Russia. That alone is worth playing along with al-Jolani for now — as long as the West walks into this with both eyes open and not becoming naive and complacent as happened before
