If Trump really wanted to break up or annex Canada (not sure he does but let us assume) the smart thing to do would be to make offers of statehood to individual provinces. Canada actually has a mechanism for provinces to exit the union by referendum, which is a legacy from the Quebec independence movement. The more pro-American provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan could be offered statehood and if even one of them voted yes in a referendum the rump Canada would be both territorially and economically illogical. This would greatly elevate pressure to give Trump whatever he wants or actually just succumb and join the U.S. against their best wishes. I hope this doesn’t happen but I have seen discussion of such and take it seriously. I’d prefer Canada retain its independence and run a different experiment than the U.S. is now attempting.

Trump is dumb on the surface but he has cut throat imperialists working for him. I’m pretty sure they can work with a nuanced way forward to eventually usurp Canada and call it interventionism to counter multipolarity.

I just can't get my head around why any Canadian would want to join the US. Is there anything that isn't a net negative? Just take healthcare.

Right! The idea of joining the US was pretty serious in much of Canada. Idea of Canada as a country owes much to the American revolution

Good thing “the smart thing to do” doesn’t seem to be his signature move…
