I’m very supportive of research aimed at increasing the lifespan and quality of life of human beings but I do not think that the goal should be to “Not Die” as Bryan Johnson is proposing and literally pursue immortality. In Greek mythology not being able to die is a recurrent theme among individuals who were cursed. The reason is that people only really have the spiritual stamina to go through a normal lifespan. Imagine how thousands of years of life would weary a person’s spirit. Dying is of course an intimidating thought but this is why all the spiritual and religious traditions of mankind have sought to make people reflect on mortality as a means of preparing and overcoming it. You can and should meditate, pray, or do whatever else is recommended and that will give you the strength to have equanimity and peace regarding life and death. Life extension research is still good because it’ll likely shed light on other advances in medical science that will be useful for keeping people healthy.

I want immortality, with the option to end it at will. There's too much to learn for just one human lifespan and I want to know it all, but I'm realistic enough to know I might eventually get bored.

I for one would love to live for a thousand years. And the only reason is; 'to find out what happens next'

In my mind, death is the only true leveler this universe provides. I don’t want humans to have infinite life because those benefits, like most benefits, will accrue to the powerful. I do agree that increased health-span is beneficial, and wouldn’t mind humans living to 200, but immortality is the province of gods.

I used to say that I wanted to upload my brain to the cloud so I could live on forever. Then I lost my brother. Now, im not so keen on that idea. Death used to scare me, but it doesn’t nearly as much now. Im faithful there is something that comes after.

I think immortality would eventually feel like a curse rather than the blessing people think it'd be. It's ok to live a long life, but not immortality IMO. Also, it'd be conflicting with the intention of the universe. Life and recycling goes hand-in-hand, with immortality, that balance would be lost.

Everlasting and great topic! In Greek mythology gods are immortal as they consume ambrosia (there are also half-gods (children of ppl and gods, btw those guys remind part of Christian symbols like returning from Hades) and mortal people, who are just going to Hades with one way ticket if they had a coin with them put under their tongue during funeral). So as for immortality - I believe it’s still unreal idea. Biologically - maybe, one day, in some thousands-millions of year, but even if people gonna achieve it - it’s still impossible to “survive” (being immortal) if we place our body somewhere in the sun surface orrr… inside a black hole. I mean, I have no idea how we can save our flesh in such environment 😅.

I'm far more interested in improving quality of life over length of life. I appreciate the sentiment of longevity research potentially unlocking new ways to be healthier longer. But life-extension alone is undesirable. When my body and mind starts to fail, stretching it out as long as possible is the opposite of my goals. Death will be the final reprieve. I aim to earn it, not avoid it. George Straight nailed it: "I'm not here for a long time, I'm here for a good time"

Most people, including myself, who have spent time treating patients in a hospital, will say death is not the toughest thing they deal with. It's watching people being kept alive with no quality of life by family members.

I think the goal should be to "Not Die" simply because science can only stop you being killed from natural aging or disease etc. all other forms of death (e.g. getting hit by a car, by accident, the eventual heat death of the universe etc.) are not things you will be able to prevent

This is why one needs to live as fully as we can. Why we should pursue things that give people the chance to follow passions and dreams rather than slogging away selling hours of their life in order to keep living.

I agree. And not to sound like a cliché, but I really just can't imagine having to lose people over and over again. It sounds so painful. And I guess you could just... not get close to people, but then that sounds unbearably lonely. Having to face death also gives more value to life.
