A heuristic for how freedom-friendly your urbanism aesthetic is: If you draw an image of a city with your urbanism aesthetic, and then replace a random building with a McDonalds, how much worse does it become? Lunarpunk clearly beats solarpunk on this dimension.

When I see Solar punk imagery, I can’t help but imagine the dark and dingy scenes elsewhere which support the happy green image.

What part of Tulum are you thinking? Used to go a fair bit, seemed decently uniform along the strip. Tons of expats from NYC running restaurants, beach hotels of varying exclusivity and party/chill vibes, just a mishmash of stuff.

I visited Tulum. I didn't end up actually going to the beach area much, stayed close to the downtown. And so the impression I walked away with was "grungy but cool small Mexican town" 😂 Only later did I realize that this was not the impression I was "supposed to get"
