I'm learning from this podcast that "jogging", and the idea of "fitness as a lifestyle" is maybe about 50 years old.

There's a scene in Mad Men S1 (~1960s) where a character says she went for a run. The response from the rest of the group is "to where?" As for what it means, probably too much material abundance. Too much food, and too much comfort. Lacking physical work, physical energy must be spent via leisure (sports, gym, etc)
