Good engineers seem to have an uncanny ability to judge the right point to switch from bouba design mode (fermi estimation, Dyson design thinking, systemic bounding boxes) to kiki design mode (strategic details locked in, key design driver variables locked, key build/buy decisions made). Too early and you risk premature optimization and all the evil that flows from it. Too late and you’re circling in art-project/PoC and insight-porn land.
