this excerpt from Milton Friedman's "Capitalism and Freedom" has always made an impression. it seems inevitable and perhaps too obvious at first glance, but the comfort of the internet being an effectively boundless place tends to closely follow. we exercise these checks and balances on a small scale online everyday.

Government hubs like Washington and Brussels have consolidated way too much power over the years. Fortunately, US is in a unique position because it's the only country in the world with a constitution explicitly allowing its citizens to peacefully overthrow a tyrannical government. Can't say the same about EU!

That said, I share Friedman's sentiment: government should be limited, and if it can't be limited, it should be dispersed. In the UK about 1/5 of the population works in some capacity for the government, which is insane.
