I often hear people say they want to move out of the city to raise kids. But ironically the best place I can think of for my future kids to grow up would be Manhattan. That’s what I would have wanted for myself if I had known it was an option.

I thought the same. But as I was raising my kids in the city I found that many things were driving them toward a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. They didn’t roam the city freely as I did. Their default was indoors and online. We moved to a small town in the mountains and now outdoor activity is the default.

can you say more? what do you think drove them toward that lifestyle? Maybe it's that I moved there when I was a bit older, but I had the complete opposite experience, I was almost never in my apartment.

1. Hard-to-resist indoor activities (video games, online) 2. Culture changes around safety issues (real or imagined). You can’t tell a 6 year old to go roam the neighborhood with friends and don’t come back until dinner 3. Even if you do send your kids out to go play, their friends won’t be doing that.
