why is there even an option to opt-out of an opepen set mid-countdown? makes little sense to me

Maybe another set dropped and you changed your mind Especially for smaller holders at least they keep the optionality

in practice what happens often is countdown begins, if nobody new opts in during the countdown, people who opted in start thinking “oh shit it’s almost over and nobody new is coming in, this set won’t be in-demand after release” and then they opt out because of crowd opinion and fear of market

The original mechanism proposed was to lock the first 80 blanks that opted in. The current one offers more collector agency and fluidity. But agree it's not perfect I think there is always a degree of "risk" for the trailblazers who first opt in. Some how rewarding them is an option but also complicates the mechanism.
