Is the Summer Group Show in New York Going the Way of the Dinosaur? Periodically, a close-up image of a smiling Ed Sheeran will pop into my head, jolting me into consciousness. I’m no fan of Sheeran’s music, so I don’t spend much time thinking about him. I do, however, think a lot about that picture, which is in fact a painting—a six-and-a-half-foot square canvas by Jana Euler, in which Sheeran’s face is pressed uncomfortably close to the viewer, his reddish beard and dreamy blue eyes appearing to warp ever so slightly.

David Anfam, Art Historian Who Rewrote the History of Abstract Expressionism, Dies at 69 David Anfam, an art historian and curator whose scholarship on Abstract Expressionism added new chapters to the movement’s history, died in London on Wednesday, sources close to him told ARTnews. He was 69. Anfam’s rigorous, in-depth studies on Abstract Expressionism have been roundly praised. His 1998 catalogue raisonné of Mark Rothko’s paintings, a 1,000-page tome that critic John Russell once labeled “a book for all seasons,” is a core text for scholars of the movement. His 2016 Abstract Expressionism survey for London’s Royal Academy of Arts was called “the most pleasurable, provocative exhibition of American art in Britain this century” by the Financial Times’s Jackie Wullschläger

This Neo-Rococo rise has been simmering in the cultural ether for some time now. A touchstone is filmmaker Sofia Coppola’s now cult-classic 2006 movie Marie Antoinette. The film featured sequences of aristocratic frivolity and boredom set to a Y2K indie rock soundtrack, capturing the checked-out ennui and the zeitgeist of the 1790s and the mid-aughts. Post-2001, Coppola’s gauzy Rococo dream, with wealthy youths consumed by intrigue and escapist pleasure as revolution and unprecedented change drummed in the distance, struck a chord with the millennial generation.

To art historians, Gray’s marriage to Millais reflects an important shift in British art. A founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Millais had worked with Gray long before she became his wife. Between 1852 and 1853, she modeled for The Order of Release, a painting that sought to do away with the same stuffy values that defined Gray’s relationship with Ruskin.
