How Jimi Hendrix Learned to Play on One String and Then Invented His Own Chord In 1957, young Jimi was helping his father with his work: together they were taking out the trash from an elderly woman's house. In the trash heap, Hendrix found a ukulele with a single string, and the woman said he could keep the instrument. One string was enough for Jimi to memorize the notes by ear. He learned them by ear, as he didn't know the notes at all. He also invented his dominant chord 7-sharp 9, called the Hendrix chord.
