Btw props… the epoch was actually a great idea and we may not have been ready in the AM without it

It worked great for like the first 30 emojis, which happened to all be 3 byte unicode chars but then… a 4 byte one made the UI barf and crash with a white page. By some amazing stroke of irony, it just happened to be a 💩emoji 💀

the demo was essentially attaching a phone number to a function, containing JS to push the SMS into a sync list (arrays synced between devices via web sockets). The crowd was told to text emojis, so they’d rain down in realtime…

hahah omg i remember this. Twilio’s culture of live coding demos for new products usually under active intense development was amazing but bumpy. For the functions launch (a lambda wrapper) we also had some fun.. the product had been in private beta and going great so I was overly confident the keynote would be fine

Sure enough some googling revealed a mailing list discussion where somebody had the (actually!) bright idea to sleep(N) on some x% of requests initially to try get some attention. It worked!

I got summoned in the early hours as an SME, very confused by the symptoms i hopped on a box and ran strace and kept finding open() calls hanging to w3.org … turns out the <?xml schema=“https://w3.org/…..xsd”> was being called by the xml validator and we’d been DDoSing them for years…

just trying to be as half a good a dude as you my man! hard to pick! one top oncall story might be a time when like 10% of calls powered by twimlbin were experiencing several seconds of post dial delay (dead air after answering) and nobody could figure out why…
