I’m of the belief that there’s an apt Chinese saying for every phenomenon. In this case it’s 由俭入奢易，由奢入俭难 - “easy for a thrifty person to become extravagant; difficult for an extravagant person to return to thrift.” The material benefits, but more so the sense of superiority/entitlement.
