The old London Bridge, built in 1209, was a marvel of medieval engineering. This stone bridge, lined with houses and shops on its sides, not only connected the two banks of the River Thames, but was also a vibrant center of commerce and social life. Over the centuries, it withstood fires and reconstructions, and the bridge became a symbol of resilience and urban activity. In contrast, today's London Bridge, opened in 1973, is a symbol of modernity and efficiency. Built of concrete and steel, the bridge is a useful structure for vehicular and pedestrian traffic in contemporary London. Unlike its predecessor, it does not contain buildings, reflecting thinking focused on the functionality and flow of urban transport.
