The old London Bridge, built in 1209, was a marvel of medieval engineering. This stone bridge, lined with houses and shops on its sides, not only connected the two banks of the River Thames, but was also a vibrant center of commerce and social life. Over the centuries, it withstood fires and reconstructions, and the bridge became a symbol of resilience and urban activity. In contrast, today's London Bridge, opened in 1973, is a symbol of modernity and efficiency. Built of concrete and steel, the bridge is a useful structure for vehicular and pedestrian traffic in contemporary London. Unlike its predecessor, it does not contain buildings, reflecting thinking focused on the functionality and flow of urban transport. This transformation shows how London has evolved from a medieval city into a modern and dynamic metropolis.
