Yasmin was not a typical Syrian refugee. Her appearance, demeanor, and overall aura set her apart, breaking glass ceilings in ways that went beyond her actions. After enduring prolonged torture, she somehow managed to escape prison and seek refuge in Turkey. During our conversations, she spoke of the countless things that had shattered within her during those dark times, pieces she believed could never be put back together. Her brother had died under torture in that same prison.
Now, through the foundation she established, Yasmin continues to break barriers by helping refugee women from Syria access psychological support and find employment opportunities. It was this strength, resilience, and defiance of stereotypes that inspired me to photograph her in this way. 11 replies
